However near or far you may venture on your travels it is always worth carrying out a little minor prior research so as to save face on arrival, with Hawaii being no exception. While indeed a state of the USA, Hawaii has a unique culture all of its own and for those looking to avoid faux pas at all possible costs, the following may be no less than golden advice.
Firstly, be prepared to get used to the the way in which the language differs from the mainland. The local way of speaking is known as Pidgin and was originally used and developed by immigrant workers as a way of communicating without those in charge understanding what was being said. Pidgin has evolved and takes some getting used to, but is essentially not too difficult to understand. However, the biggest faux pas most make is trying out Pidgin for themselves, which is never recommended and likely to be ridiculed and frowned upon by the true locals.
If visiting a home, always bring the hostess a gift by way of food or wine or even one of your ornate Backgammon sets UK friends donated to your trip – but never, ever money. Furthermore, entering a home with shoes on could not be more inappropriate, unless specifically asked to do so.
Furthermore, be sure not to get too confused when asked to don slippers, as the word in Hawaii actually relates to flip flops!
There are thousands of other examples but these are by far and wide the biggest slip ups, but with just a little common sense interest it really isn’t difficult to maintain dignity and instead soak up what make Hawaii such a gem.
